Why install artificial grass?
The list of reasons to install artificial grass continues to grow. The long list includes motivations such as:
- Always looks great without the time and money spent for maintenance
- The looming water shortage drives rebate programs and residential awareness to cut water usage
- Cutting water usage helps to save highly threatened water supply
- Allergen Free
- Perfect alternative for shaded, wet, or other areas where it is difficult to grow natural grass

- Do I need to worry about insects?
The artificial grass is a sterile environment . However, over time it is possible that wind borne debris might deposit enough nutrients within the infill to support a small number of insects. Even so, this will always be a lot less than what happens with natural grass.
- How does the synthetic grass hold up in high heat areas?
Yes, our turf is manufactured using the highest quality resins possible and can stand up to UV rays. If it makes sense for your situation, we highly recommend the ProGreen Cool Turf system, which utilizes organic infill that mirrors the temperature of natural grass.
- How does the turf handle excessive rainfall or water?
The backing system that a turf has is extremely important. Using a turf, such as ProLawn, with a 100% permeable backing system will help limit exposure to moisture accumulation that may lead to mold, mildew, or odors.
- What sort of base is recommended?
The most common materials to use as a sub-base are ¾” AB or Class II road base. This material is specified as a ¾” minus material and compact to roughly 95%. It is very absorbent and percolates quickly. In some situations, a leveling layer of ¼” minus or Decomposed Granite may be used to compensate for the larger aggregate in the ¾” material.
- What maintenance is required?
Very little maintenance is needed with artificial turf. Keeping the area free from leaves and debris can be done using a leaf blower, rake, or broom. The broom is also useful in standing any fibers up that may have laid down under traffic. Washing the turf down by occasionally spraying it with the garden hose can help keep dust and dirt from making the turf appear to look faded. Rain will naturally serve this function as well.
- How long will our artificial grass last?
The area, the product, the installation, and the intended use are all weighted factors in this equation. High quality artificial turf may last up to 25 years under optimal circumstances. The turf comes with a 15 year manufacturer warranty.
- How will our pets react to the artificial grass?
Pets love ProLawn’s turf. Waste material can be scooped up or hosed down to remove. With ProLawn’s 100% permeable backing system, water washes through the turf and down into the base material. In very warm climates, artificial turf can become hot in direct sunlight. In pet areas, shade structures are recommended for this purpose.
- Does the grass have a directional pile?
Yes, it will need to be matched when you install it.
- With a lot of use, will the grass matt or flatten?
Under heavy traffic, any long pile turf/carpet will show signs of matting. Stepping stones or concrete in the high traffic area can reduce wear.
- Can I use artificial grass beside a swimming pool?
Yes. This is an ideal application as it keeps grass clippings, and therefore, chemicals from expediting the deterioration of the pool equipment.
- Why is sand infill used?
The function of sand in turf is weight. It help prevent the turf from expanding and contracting with temperature changes. Sand is also chemically inert and fire resistant.
- What can we use for edging?
Clean, permanent, professional borders are recommended to finish turf edges. Concrete curbing or Wood-Flex Polypropylene bender boards are great for this use. Try to make sure that your border will last as long as the turf.
- What are the costs of artificial grass?
Although the up-front cost of installation can be more than natural, this excess is easily recovered over the life of the grass when you consider the long-term costs of irrigation and drainage systems, mowing, fertilizing, watering, aerating, and over-seeding. Cost may vary by region and can be determined by scheduling a free estimate.
- Can I install artificial grass on top of my existing lawn?
An aggregate sub-base is recommended to keep the area level and compacted. This aggregate base is also valuable for drainage. Most natural soils will not compact or absorb as well as an aggregate base.
- How easy is it to cut and shape artificial grass?
It is not terribly difficult. We recommend practicing on some scrap before you take on your project. Using a carpet knife or carpet shaper can make things much more accurate, fast, and easy.
- What holds down the artificial grass?
The weight of silica sand helps to hold the turf down. Sand or a similar substitute is recommended in all landscape turfs, especially in high traffic areas. The grass should also be spiked using landscape staples or galvanized spikes.
- How quick can I get my artificial grass?
We keep the majority of our styles in stock. If you need something that is not in stock we can usually have it within a week. If you choose to have the project professionally installed, you may need to plan on about a 3 week lead time.
- Is artificial grass safe for children?
Yes. Keep in mind that in warmer climates, the turf can get hot in direct sunlight. Always check turf before letting children make contact with the turf with bare skin.
- Will weeds grow on the artificial grass?
Strangely the answer is yes. The sand infill can provide a hydroponic environment for the seeds to root. However, the backing we use for the artificial grass is strong enough to prevent the roots growing through to the soil. This means that any weeds can easily be brushed away with a leaf rake.
- What are the applications when artificial grass can be used?
Lawns and landscaping are the most common uses. Sports playing surfaces are also very popular from tennis courts to putting greens to soccer fields. There are many other uses, for instance: dog runs and backyard patios.

See What Our Customers Have to Say
“ProLawn was a pleasure to work with, from the initial consultation and design help to the quality of the finished product, we were very pleased. A year later the Project looks as good as the day it was installed. Your staff was easy to communicate and work with and I would recommend ProLawn to anyone considering going to artificial turf!”
“We are very happy with our new lawn. We get lots of comments like how much is your water bill, how much water does it take to keep the lawn so green. You have to tell people it is not real grass before they realize it is artificial. Save's me time as well. Free's me up to do other things. It will be very beneficial now with going to Level 2 drought restrictions this summer.”

As previously experienced, your installation team performed very professionally and knowledgeably. We believe that, at an appropriate site, this investment does add value as well as enjoyment to the property. Regards...”
